Phone lines fall into two main categories, analogue and
digital.
- Analogue lines are most suitable for individual users
(typically where a complex phone system is not required).
Where a single line needs to be expanded additional analogue
auxiliary lines can be added to the main line (having the same
telephone number), to allow several handsets to be connected -
these are known as multiline or auxiliary lines.
- Digital Lines are used to connect to phone systems where
multiple phone calls / phone users are handling calls together
these are called ISDN (integrated Services Ditigal Network).
ISDN provides significant improvements over analogue lines in that
multiple telephone numbers can be presented over the lines, to
allow for multiple department numbers / direct to desk numbers
(known as direct dial in - DDI). ISDN lines are typically
connected to a phone system.
ISDN can be provided in two formats:
ISDN2e: Each ISDN2e line provides two telephone lines, meaning
that a maximum of two calls can be made / received at once.
ISDN30e: Each ISDN30e line provides upto 30 telephone lines
(minimum of 8).
